Altaro VM Backup protects popular releases of Hyper-V and VMware and works with most storage technologies
Altaro VM Backup comes with advanced capabilities in critical facets of backup such as backup replication, prompt recovery, and centralized management.
Replication
Altaro VM Backup delivers fast, efficient, and secure backup for data protection plus offsite replication for dependable recovery. Major backup and replication features include:
- Ransomware Defense leveraging Immutable Cloud Storage: Immutable backup for cloud object storage allows tamper-proof data while under the defined policy so that backup data cannot be modified or deleted by anyone including administrators or root users. This provides an extra level of protection and recoverability in the event of a ransomware breach.
- Augmented In-Line Deduplication: Altaro's in-line deduplication sends only altered data to backup storage devices, reducing network traffic, cutting backup storage requirements, and enhancing throughput. Deduplication works with data on single virtual machines and across many VMs.
- Continuous Data Protection: Rather than scheduling one-a-day backups, you can schedule backup intervals to as brief as five minutes to lower your RPO.
- Concurrency: You can back up many VMs concurrently, allowing you to conduct backup operations during briefer off-hour time windows when the most bandwidth is available and workload throughput is less urgent.
- Live/Hot Backup: Integration with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service allows you to back up VMs without requiring downtime.
- Cluster Shared Volumes and VMware vCenter: The ability to protect virtual machines within a Windows Hyper-V Failover Cluster (with or without CSV) or within a vCenter environment supports larger deployments.
- Offsite Replication: To assist with business recovery, you can deploy Altaro's Offsite Server tool on a remote server for storing a copy of your backups at a remote location.
- Flexible Scheduling and Retention Policies: You can set different backup schedules and retention policies for individual VMs.
Scheduling and retention options for Altaro are simple to set up, review and edit
- Workload Specific Protection: Altaro can utilize Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and any VSS Writers working inside the protected VM when making a backup. Apps such as Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL will be aware the backup has taken place and automatically run the appropriate maintenance jobs such as truncating transaction logs.
- Military-Class Encryption: Prior to saving data to a backup device, you have the option of encrypting it using the 256-Bit AES standard.
- Virtual Disk Exclusion: You have the ability to specify which Virtual Disks to include or ignore in your virtual machine backups.
- Grandfather-Father-Son Archiving (GFS): Besides your continuous and scheduled backups, you can set up an additional schedule to make and archive a new backup version each week, month and year.
- Cloud Backup to Microsoft Azure: Altaro supports backup to a Microsoft Azure Block Blob storage account, which is the least expensive storage alternative available on the Azure cloud.
Altaro VM Backup allows you to protect virtual machines hosted on-premises, remotely or in the cloud
- Cloud Backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi: Altaro VM Backup VM Backup allows native backup to Amazon S3 and Wasabi clouds. No extra resources operating in the cloud are needed to support storage for backup.
- Back up to multiple off-premises datacenters: For improved resilience, you can create copies of VMs on multiple off-premises locations including multiple public clouds like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3).
Restore and Disaster Recovery
Altaro VM Backup VM Backup offers a rich set of tools for point-in-time recovery of virtual machines and data files that have been backed up on schedule and have to be restored. In the event of a disaster, Altaro VM Backup VM Backup has tools for quickly restoring a complete site from the most recent copy protected offsite.
- Restore as Clone: You can restore a VM backup to a new destination with a new name, permitting the cloned VM to run side by side with the original virtual machine. This avoids the need to write over active virtual machines.
- Restore to Different Host: You can recover a VM backup to a new or different host. The VM can be recovered from the local backup location, or directly from the remote copy location. (You may not cross-recover between Windows Hyper-V and VMware Hypervisors.)
- Boot from Backup: You can immediately boot any virtual machine copy directly from the backup device for testing or to achieve a major improvement in RTO during a disaster recovery event.
- File-Level Recovery: You can rapidly restore individual files from any virtual machine backup.
- WAN-Optimized Replication: You can make continuous backups of your virtual machines to a remote location and switch instantly to the copy site in the event that a calamity disables your primary virtual machines. This can dramatically improve your Recovery Time Objective and get your organization back in business quickly.
- Microsoft Exchange Item-Level Recovery: You can retrieve specific emails and attachments from the Exchange Mailbox database.
Altaro VM Backup enables you to recover specific emails from an Exchange Mailbox
- Restore Different Backup Versions: You can restore from different periods rather than being limited to the latest copy.
- Sandbox Restores and Testing: This feature lets you program or launch by hand validation tests to confirm the accuracy of your backup. You can verify backup folders without attaching the VM to your Hyper-V or VMware Hypervisor, or you can run a complete test restore to a clone and verify that the restored VM is able to boot.
- Backup Health Monitor: Backup storage integrity can be monitored on demand and repaired automatically as part of the next backup operation.
Management and Reporting
The web-based Cloud Management Console unifies management, monitoring and reporting for Altaro Virtual Machine Backup environments. The CMC provides a centralized online portal for tasks like launching backups, setting up on-premises and off-premises backup sites, configuring encryption keys, and recovering VMs. The CMC also conserves time by permitting you to create specialized templates with backup schedules, retention policies and advanced settings and apply them to various VMs across a selection of hosts. In addition, you can utilize the Cloud Management Console to observe backup activities as they occur, view historic reports on operations and errors, and program the CMC to send email notices for completed or failed processes and other important information.
